He was born at Stretton, Clay Cross, Derbyshire and lived at King's Street, Clay Cross. He was a miner at Alma Colliery, Clay Cross prior to enlisting at Clay Cross in June 1915. He went to France 26th February 1917 and was killed in action 27th April 1917, during the attack on Quarries and Colagne Farm, France.
