Son of Charles and Mary Anne Brown, of 6, Victoria Terrace, Southwell, Nottinghamshire. He was Lace Hand prior to enlisting 10th February 1908 at Southwell. He went to France 8th September 1914 and was killed in action, 13th September 1916, aged 26, during the attack at Arrow Head Copse near Guillemont, France during the Battle of the Somme.

His brother Corporal John Harry Brown 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment also fell in the Great War.
