Born and lived at Duffield, Derbyshire. Son of George and Hannah Butler, of 5, Tamworth Cottages, Duffield. He was a Postman prior to enlisting at Belper, Derbyshire. He was killed in action, 24th October 1917, aged 34, whilst in a party carrying out railway construction near Ypres, Belgium.

His brother Private Fred Butler 1/5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment also fell in the Great War.
