Born at Blidworth, Nottinghamshire. Son of Edward and Mary A. Godfrey, of Ashwell Terrace, Blidworth. He was a coal miner at Rufford Colliery, Nottinghamshire prior to enlisting 26th August 1914 at Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. He went to France 15th December 1915 and was killed in action during the Battle of the Somme 1st July 1916.
