Born at Kimberley and lived at Southwell, Nottinghamshire. Son of Henry and Alice A. Hopwell, of 8 Chatham Street, Southwell. He was a lace at Carey and Son's, Southwell, prior to enlisting 1st April 1908 at Southwell. He went to France 2nd March 1915 and was killed in action, 30th July 1915, aged 25, during the German attack at Hooge, Belgium.

Buried/Commemorated : Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium. Panel 39 and 41.


His brother Private Albert Edward Hopewell, 1/8th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, also fell in the Great War.
