Born at Tupton, Derbyshire and lived at Pilsley, Derbyshire. Son of John Stanley and Mary Ellen May, of Garth House, Pilsley, Chesterfield. He was a lace draughtsman prior to enlisting at Ilkeston. He was killed in action, 16th June 1916, age 27, whilst serving in the line near Givenchy, France.

His brother Private Joseph Stanley May, 11th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, also fell in the Great War.
