Born and lived at Brampton, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Son of Edmund and Elizabeth Nicholls, of Mill Farm, Chesterfield Road, Bolsover, Derbyshire. He enlisted at Chesterfield and was killed in action, 21st March 1918, during the German attack at Mory L'Abbaye, France.

His brother, Private Arthur Vernon Nicholls, 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, also fell in the Great War.
